About OpenViz — Seeing & Understanding What Is Happening Right Now
Government open data should not be confined to cold spreadsheets and fragmented portals. OpenViz exists to decode vast public datasets into intuitive, real-time visual narratives so everyone can grasp current environmental realities at a glance.
From sudden tectonic tremors and tracking torrential cloudbursts to monitoring reservoir capacities and national power loads, we translate complex raw telemetry into clear visual stories backed by authoritative open data.
1. The Vision: From Cold Numbers to Visual Clarity
Why we build OpenViz: bridging the gap between raw open data and human understanding.
Taiwan’s government agencies publish an extraordinary volume of real-time open data every single day: hundreds of meteorological sensor streams, seismic sensor accelerations, reservoir storage calculations, power grid telemetry, and atmospheric pollutants. Yet for the average citizen, an isolated number like "250mm cumulative rain", "reservoir elevation 245.3m", or a raw JSON array gives little intuitive sense of urgency or spatial context.
Numbers alone do not tell a story unless they are given spatial dimensions, temporal trends, and visual hierarchy. OpenViz was founded to answer simple, critical everyday questions:
Interactive GIS maps instantly reveal where rainbands are concentrating, which fault zone triggered the earthquake, and which counties face severe air quality alerts.
Trend sparklines and flow balances show whether reservoirs are gaining or losing water, how peak power margins evolve, and whether rainfall is intensifying or subsiding.
Translating raw scientific values into clear contextual categories: flood discharge warnings, earthquake intensity tiers, reserve margins, and sensitive-group health guidance.
2. How We Visually Decode Different Datasets
Turning domain-specific parameters into intuitive visual comprehension.
Every type of environmental phenomenon requires a unique visual language to be truly understood:
- Precipitation: From Gauges to Spatial Storm Tracking即時降雨視角
Instead of looking at isolated millimeter tables, our rainfall map projects precipitation intensity across Taiwan’s topography. You can immediately see whether rain is trapped in mountain catchments or inundating coastal cities, with 10-minute, 1-hour, and 24-hour comparative toggles.
- Earthquakes: From Coordinates to Impact Ripples即時地震視角
When a tremor strikes, coordinates like "24.1°N, 121.5°E" mean little to citizens. We instantly plot the epicenter on interactive maps, render depth indicators, and illustrate county-by-county maximum seismic intensity based on the latest 10-tier intensity standard.
- Reservoirs: From Dry Volumes to Water Level Intuition水情平衡視角
A number like "40,000,000 m³" is difficult to contextualize. We render interactive dam cross-section diagrams and daily inflow vs. outflow net balances, showing clearly whether a typhoon actually quenched a drought or if a dam is currently discharging flood water.
- Power Grid: From Megawatts to Generation Anatomy能源透視視角
Power consumption surges during summer heatwaves. We transform complex dispatch data into interactive treemaps and 24-hour load curves, revealing the exact contributions of solar, wind, hydro, gas, and coal in real time.
- Air Quality: From Micrograms to Breathing Advisory空品健康視角
Visualizing PM2.5, PM10, and ozone across 84 stations with standard health colors, helping parents, athletes, and sensitive individuals make informed outdoor decisions.
3. Grounded in Authentic Government Open Data
Visual innovation must always be rooted in uncompromised, objective facts.
OpenViz does not speculate, extrapolate, or alter raw environmental data. All visualizations are computed directly from official government open APIs in accordance with the Open Government Data License (Taiwan). Original datasets belong to their respective authorities:
Source of rainfall gauge observations and seismic earthquake bulletins under CWA Open Data Rules.
CWA Open DataSource of reservoir hydrologic capacities, water levels, and release data under Open Government Data License v1.
WRA DatasetSources of live unit-level power generation telemetry and national ambient air quality monitoring datasets.
MOENV Open Data4. Craftsmanship, Performance & Sustainability
Fast load times, zero layout shifts, and non-intrusive advertising.
To ensure that citizens can check critical data even under poor mobile connectivity or emergency situations, we engineered OpenViz around strict technical principles:
Static pre-rendering and strict container sizing guarantee that charts do not jump or shift while data loads, delivering calm and readable experiences.
To sustain high-frequency API ingestion and global bandwidth costs, we display standard Google AdSense units. We promise: no pop-ups, no full-screen overlays, and no obstruction of crucial data.
5. Who We Are & Connect With Us
Maintained by data enthusiasts who believe in the power of visual knowledge.
OpenViz is maintained by independent developers and data enthusiasts who believe that open data is most powerful when it is visible and intuitive. We warmly welcome community feedback, feature proposals, and data collaborations:
