Plant Overview

Flagship Plant

Datan Power Plant sits on the coast of Guanyin District, Taoyuan, and hosts Taipower's largest cluster of combined-cycle gas turbine units. It sits next to the Datan LNG receiving terminal, giving it a direct fuel supply, and plays a major role in northern Taiwan's grid as both baseload and peaking capacity. New units have been added in recent years as part of Taiwan's shift toward greater reliance on natural gas.

Datan's nine combined-cycle units were built in stages: Units 1 and 2 entered service in 2006 with Mitsubishi M501F turbines, followed by the more efficient M501G-equipped Units 3 through 6, while the newest Units 8 and 9 use GE 7HA.02 turbines rated over 1,100MW each. Datan is also the only Taipower thermal plant equipped with automatic load-shedding and full black-start capability after a grid collapse.

大潭CC (Natural Gas) currently reports a net generation of 5,352.4 MW across 9 unit(s), against an installed capacity of 7,544.5 MW (70.9% utilization).

Most gas units are combined-cycle (CC) plants that can start up and ramp output quickly, making them well suited to balancing intermittent wind and solar output. Taiwan's gas supply relies almost entirely on imported LNG with limited on-site storage days, so grid stability depends heavily on receiving-terminal capacity and shipping schedules.

Since the 2016 energy transition policy began, natural gas has been positioned as the bridge fuel replacing retiring nuclear and coal capacity, and it is now Taiwan's single largest source of generation. Flagship plants include Datan, Tongxiao, and Xingda. The pace of new LNG receiving-terminal construction (such as the "Third Terminal") is the key bottleneck for further expanding gas-fired capacity.

大潭CC#3 is currently listed with the status "歲修".
